Hangul Day is the annual holiday for Koreans, celebrating the creation of the Korean language system, called Hangul. It was created by King Sejong’s administration in the year of 1446, and the day when it was created became a holiday after Korea gained independence.

On the preceding Sunday, October 1st, Korean Youth for Advancement of Culture (KYAC) and the city of Milpitas collaborated together at Milpitas Public Library.

KYAC opened the event with both Korean and American anthems and welcoming remarks from the KYAC’s advisor Dr. Eun Hee Koo. People at the event sang the ‘happy birthday’ song for the 580th birthday of hangul.

Then, the representative of Milpitas Mayor Carmen Montano delivered the congratulatory remarks and awarded the KYAC volunteers, who prepared booths and the presentation. After a list of awards were given, she handed the mic to children who sang the Korean Vowels Song.

Moving on, Hiep Nguyen, senior Congressional Advisor of Congressman Ro Khanna, delivered his congratulatory remark and handed the awards to KYAC members. Additionally, it was followed by a reading of Hunminjungeum from the First Chairperson of the Board of KLACF. Likewise, it continued with congratulatory remarks.

Meanwhile, some KYAC volunteers printed and exhibited the Hunminjeongeum, and a Kpop club from Homestead high covered “Future Perfect” by Enhypen. Everyone applauded and appreciated their performances, cheering the mood up. Also, Korean teachers in Cuba and Dr. Koo cheered each other up, making people laugh. They agreed to collaborate together; KYAC can teach Cuban students, for example. Everyone applauded for this harmonious relationship.

The event ended with a group photo and a series of activities planned from each booth. KYAC volunteers prepared a booth for snacks, traditional games, royal hanbok (traditional Korean clothes), and songpyeon (rice cake), where participants could make it at the designated booth.

Everyone enjoyed a refreshing event at the Milpitas library. It couldn’t have happened if not hangul. So, why not appreciate it? Happy birthday, hangul!
