Lunar New Year Event

Lunar new year is a holiday celebrated around Asia, often falling around early February. People eat rice cake soup, play Yutnori, and bow for good luck. On Sunday, February third, the celebration hosted by both the KASCL and KLACF kicked off with the Korean and American national anthem.


The first guest speaker, Kyungsoo Choi, the president of the Kascl-SC gave opening remarks to welcome and congratulate everyone. This was followed by Dr. Eun Hee Koo, the Chairperson of the Board of the Directors of Korean Language and Culture Foundation, giving a quick thanks to everyone for coming, before leading the Seulnal song. Many other important guest speakers, such as the president of Kowin, Jin Yi, and appointment advisor of KYAC, Kevin Park, came to give their congratulatory remarks for setting up the event.


Next, kyac members prepared presentations on rice cake soup, presenting the rich history and how to make rice cake soup, along with How to play a korean board game, Yutnori.


Next was a demonstration of an essential part of lunar new years, respecting elders by learning how to properly bow, which was taught by two kyac members. As dishes containing lunar new year food, such as the rice cake soup, were handed out, attendees were treated to a myriad of songs, starting with an ensemble of kyac members playing Ariang and On a Wonderful Day in October, continuing with the Korean traditional dance academy performing Spring and and the Jindo drum dance. This was followed by the Keyboard Ensemble class playing the songs Memories of Friends and Thoughts of Older Brother. The final two acts were by A kyac member dancing to Super Shy, and the katuri Korean traditional dance academy playing the Uhwudong Dance. After, attendees were allowed to play Yutnori concluding the ceremony.
